“Togo Plays a Key Role in Regional Connectivity”, said Shri Sevala Naik Mude at Togo’s Independence Celebration

At the celebration of the 66th Independence Day of Togo, hosted in New Delhi on 30 April 2026, Shri Sevala Naik Mude, Additional Secretary (Central & West Africa), Ministry of External Affairs, reaffirmed India’s enduring commitment to Africa and highlighted the growing depth of India–Togo relations.

Addressing a distinguished gathering of diplomats, officials, and business leaders, Shri Mude described India–Africa ties as deeply rooted in history and shared experiences.

“India stood shoulder to shoulder with African countries not only during their liberation struggles, but also in their journey of nation-building thereafter,” he said.

A Partnership Built on History
Emphasising centuries-old civilisational and trade linkages, he noted that India’s engagement with Africa extends far beyond contemporary diplomacy.

He highlighted India’s continued role in capacity building, institution development, and human resource training, which has supported African nations since their independence.

Looking Ahead: India–Africa Forum Summit
Referring to the India–Africa Forum Summit process, Shri Mude noted that the upcoming fourth summit, in May 2026, will open new avenues for cooperation.

“Africa is a continent of the future, and India and Africa together represent a natural partnership for global growth,” he stated.

Togo: A Strategic Partner in West Africa
Focusing on bilateral ties, Shri Mude described Togo as a key gateway to West Africa, highlighting the strategic importance of the Port of Lomé.

“Though modest in size, Togo plays a significant role in regional trade and connectivity,” he observed.

India’s opening of a resident mission in Lomé in 2020 has further strengthened bilateral engagement.

Expanding Trade and Investment
Bilateral trade between India and Togo has witnessed strong growth, with Indian companies actively investing in sectors such as manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and logistics.

“Togo’s transparent policies and business-friendly environment have attracted Indian investments across sectors,” he noted.

Development Partnership and Capacity Building
India’s development cooperation with Togo includes Lines of Credit exceeding USD 200 million, particularly in rural electrification.
In addition, India continues to support Togo through: ITEC training programmes, ICCR scholarships and institutional capacity-building initiatives.

“India is proud to support Togo’s development journey through demand-driven and people-centric initiatives,” Shri Mude emphasised.

Education: A Cornerstone of Cooperation
India remains a key education hub for African students, including those from Togo. “Education remains one of the strongest pillars of India–Africa cooperation,” he said.

Shared Growth Vision
Highlighting Africa’s rising global importance, Shri Mude noted that India’s trade with Africa stands at approximately USD 100 billion, reflecting the growing economic partnership.“India and Africa are natural partners in shaping a more inclusive and prosperous global future,” he remarked.

Diaspora and Cultural Connect
He also acknowledged the Indian community in Togo for its contribution to the local economy and its role in strengthening bilateral ties.

A Message of Commitment
Shri Mude reaffirmed India’s long-term commitment to Togo and the African continent. “India remains committed to deepening its partnership with Togo and Africa, based on mutual respect, shared values, and common aspirations,” he said.
