Introduction

Recent advances in generative artificial intelligence (AI) are profoundly transforming labour markets and reshaping workforce requirements across industries. The rapid diffusion of AI technologies has increased demand for new technical competencies while simultaneously enhancing the importance of human-centred skills. Organisations increasingly seek employees capable of integrating technological expertise with creativity, communication, leadership, and critical thinking. As AI systems become embedded in business processes, employees are expected not only to understand and utilise these technologies but also to adapt to evolving workplace demands continuously. Consequently, the future labour market will increasingly favour individuals who combine technological proficiency with interpersonal and strategic competencies.

The digital transformation of economies has accelerated the emergence of new occupations while simultaneously altering the nature of existing jobs. Technological innovations such as generative AI, cloud computing, digital platforms, and automation are redefining how organisations operate and how work is performed. As a result, workforce development is increasingly centred on lifelong learning, continuous reskilling, and the ability to integrate multiple competencies. This section explores emerging skill requirements in the AI-driven economy, with particular attention to generative AI, globalisation of digital labour, human-centred competencies, skill integration, and the growing importance of prompt engineering.

Emerging Technical Skills in the Era of Generative AI and the Globalisation of Platform Work

Recent developments in generative AI have further increased demand for specialised skills such as prompt engineering, workflow automation, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), vector databases, AI model customisation, and API-based systems. Although prompt engineering is still a relatively new occupation, employers increasingly value professionals who combine AI knowledge with communication skills, creativity, and domain expertise.

Recent research shows that the geography of platform work is becoming increasingly globalised. While the United States remains the largest source of demand for online labour, countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Philippines, and Serbia have become major providers of digital services through global platform work. Online platform work enables organisations to access specialised skills regardless of geographic location, while workers gain access to international markets and employment opportunities. This global expansion of digital labour markets has further intensified demand for advanced digital competencies and continuous skills upgrading.

At the same time, the increasing globalisation of digital labour creates new opportunities for highly skilled professionals capable of combining technical expertise with problem-solving, adaptability, and intercultural communication skills. Consequently, workforce competitiveness increasingly depends on the ability to operate effectively in globally interconnected, AI-enabled work environments.

The continued growth of artificial intelligence, digital platforms, cloud computing, and remote collaboration technologies is expected to further expand opportunities for online work in the coming years. In this context, Serbia is well-positioned to strengthen its role as a regional hub for digital work and platform-based employment. However, maintaining this position will require sustained investment in digital skills, lifelong learning, technological infrastructure, innovation capacity, and supportive regulatory policies. These factors will be essential to ensure that platform work contributes not only to individual employment opportunities but also to broader economic development, competitiveness, and social sustainability in the digital age.

The Growing Importance of Human-Centred Competencies

While technological skills are becoming increasingly important, recent evidence suggests that technological advancement simultaneously enhances the value of human-centred competencies. As AI systems increasingly perform routine and repetitive tasks, uniquely human capabilities become critical sources of competitive advantage. The future workforce is expected to demonstrate creative thinking, analytical reasoning, resilience, flexibility, adaptability, and leadership capabilities.¹

Employees are increasingly expected to interpret information, exercise judgment, solve complex and ambiguous problems, and effectively manage interpersonal relationships. These competencies are particularly important because AI systems can generate information but cannot fully replace human judgment, ethical reasoning, emotional intelligence, or contextual understanding.

Communication skills are becoming especially important in knowledge-intensive environments. Leadership, mentoring, talent development, and team coordination are also gaining strategic importance as organisations seek to maximise the benefits of human-AI collaboration. Recent evidence further suggests that leadership, judgment, creativity, and communication constitute key sources of competitive advantage in AI-augmented workplaces.²

Skill Stacking and Integrated Competency Portfolios

An emerging concept attracting considerable attention among researchers and practitioners is skill stacking. Rather than relying on a single specialisation, modern professionals are increasingly expected to combine multiple complementary competencies. Career success, therefore, depends less on narrow expertise and more on integrated competency portfolios.

Modern professionals are expected to combine AI literacy, data analytics, business understanding, project management, process optimisation, and interpersonal skills. Such combinations enable employees to operate effectively in complex and rapidly changing work environments. For example, an employee possessing expertise in data analytics combined with communication and leadership skills is likely to be more valuable than an individual possessing only technical expertise.

Current forecasts indicate that five major skill clusters are expected to dominate workforce development through 2030: AI and automation; data and analytics; information technology and cybersecurity; business innovation and process optimisation; and people management and leadership.³ Together, these clusters illustrate the growing convergence between technological and human-centred competencies.

Continuous learning, adaptability, and proactive career management are therefore becoming essential components of professional success.

Prompt Engineering as an Emerging Profession

Prompt engineers are among the most sought-after and highly paid professionals in the digital economy. They design, test, and optimise prompts to ensure that AI systems such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and similar platforms produce accurate, reliable, and contextually relevant outputs. Their primary task involves translating human intentions and business needs into machine-executable instructions.

Key responsibilities of prompt engineers include designing and optimising prompts for business applications, testing AI outputs and improving quality, developing automated AI workflows, integrating AI tools into organisational processes, reducing errors and biases in AI-generated outputs, and creating domain-specific prompts for various industries.

As generative AI technologies continue to expand across sectors, prompt engineering has emerged as a highly interdisciplinary profession combining technical knowledge, domain expertise, creativity, communication skills, and critical thinking. Organisations increasingly recognise that effective use of AI systems depends not only on technological infrastructure but also on the quality of human interaction with these systems. Consequently, prompt engineering is expected to remain a strategically important profession in the evolving digital economy.

The emergence of generative AI is fundamentally transforming workforce competency requirements and reshaping labour markets worldwide. While demand for advanced technological skills continues to grow, human-centred competencies such as creativity, communication, leadership, adaptability, and critical thinking remain indispensable. Future career success will increasingly depend on professionals’ ability to combine diverse competencies through skill stacking, lifelong learning, and continuous adaptation.

The globalisation of digital labour markets and the expansion of platform work create significant opportunities for both individuals and organisations. However, realising these opportunities requires sustained investment in digital skills, technological infrastructure, innovation capacity, and supportive public policies. In this context, prompt engineering represents a prominent example of a new interdisciplinary profession illustrating the convergence of technological expertise and human capabilities in the AI-driven economy. Ultimately, organisations and societies capable of successfully integrating technological and human-centred competencies will be better positioned to achieve sustainable economic growth and competitiveness in the digital era.
