The Embassy of the Republic of Paraguay in India hosted a grand diplomatic reception at the Taj Mahal Hotel on 19 May 2026 to commemorate the 215th Anniversary of Paraguay’s Independence and the 65th Anniversary of diplomatic relations between Paraguay and India. The evening brought together senior government officials, ambassadors, members of the diplomatic corps, business leaders, and distinguished guests from India and abroad.
The event was graced by Pabitra Margherita, Minister of State for External Affairs of India, as the Chief Guest.
Addressing the gathering, H.E. Fleming Duarte reflected on the deepening partnership between the two countries and highlighted Paraguay’s growing economic and strategic relevance in South America.
“Although our countries are geographically distant, Paraguay and India are united by shared democratic values and a common aspiration for peace, prosperity, sustainable development, and mutual progress,” Ambassador Duarte remarked.
Speaking about Paraguay’s economic transformation, Ambassador Duarte described the country as the “best-kept secret” and the “hidden gem” of South America. He noted that Paraguay today stands among the region’s most stable and dynamic economies, supported by macroeconomic stability, renewable energy advantages, industrial growth, and increasing international investor confidence.
“Paraguay has achieved sustained macroeconomic stability, competitive energy advantages, a growing industrial sector, and increasing international recognition as an attractive destination for investment and innovation,” he stated.
The Ambassador further emphasised Paraguay’s strategic importance as a gateway to South American markets and highlighted the immense opportunities for cooperation with India in sectors including agriculture, food processing, renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, information technology, infrastructure, auto components, and sustainable development.
The evening also celebrated the renewed momentum in bilateral relations in recent years. Ambassador Duarte referred to the opening of the Indian Embassy in Asunción in 2022, the visit of India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and the official visit of Paraguayan President Santiago Peña to India as important milestones that have opened new avenues of cooperation.
Highlighting Paraguay’s commitment to regional integration and multilateral cooperation, he noted that Paraguay currently holds the Presidency of Mercosur, representing a market of over 300 million people. He also underlined Paraguay’s active engagement with India-led global initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance, the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, the Global Biofuels Alliance, and the International Big Cat Alliance.
Ambassador Duarte also acknowledged the growing role of Indian industry in Paraguay and mentioned several Indian companies that have expanded their engagement with the South American nation, including Mahindra & Mahindra, Royal Enfield, Tata, and Jain Irrigation Systems, among others.
“As Ambassador of Paraguay to India, it gives me immense pride to witness firsthand the growing closeness between our two countries and the increasing interest among our institutions, business communities, and peoples,” he said.
Concluding his address, Ambassador Duarte expressed optimism about the future course of bilateral ties and called for stronger economic, cultural, and people-to-people partnerships between the two nations.
“Tonight, as we celebrate Paraguay’s independence and the enduring friendship between our nations, let us also celebrate the bridges that connect our peoples and the promising future that lies ahead.”
