On 5th May 2026, the SHoM (Spouses of Heads of Mission) group, under the leadership of the spouse of the Ambassador of Egypt, Ms. Reham Hindousa, hosted its much-anticipated monthly coffee morning, an occasion that beautifully blended tradition with togetherness.

Held at the Egyptian Ambassador’s residence, the gathering brought together spouses of ambassadors and high commissioners accredited to India, women who, in their own right, play a vital role in nurturing the human dimension of diplomacy. The atmosphere was one of warmth and easy elegance, where conversations flowed as freely as the coffee, and cultural exchange took centre stage.

The highlight of the morning was an evocative presentation on Egypt’s enchanting Siwa Oasis: a hidden jewel nestled in the vast expanse of the Western Desert. Through vivid narration and visual storytelling, guests were transported to this serene haven known for its breathtaking landscapes, shimmering salt lakes, and an enduring sense of ecological harmony. The presentation went beyond geography, offering a glimpse into the soul of Siwa, its people, its traditions, and its timeless rhythm of life.

Particularly captivating was the exploration of the role of women in Siwan society: their daily lives, their artistry, and their deep connection to heritage. The intricate traditional attire, adorned with symbolic motifs, and the exquisite handcrafted jewellery spoke of a culture where identity and craftsmanship are intimately intertwined. It was a reminder that across continents, the language of adornment carries stories of belonging, resilience, and beauty.

At the heart of her presentation was a deeply personal and insightful reflection on the women of Siwa, whom she described as “the real heart of society.” Skilled in intricate handicrafts, particularly embroidery, Siwan women carry forward traditions that are both artistic and symbolic. Their attire, long, flowing garments adorned with vibrant hand embroidery, embodies identity, heritage, and social meaning. “Embroidery is not just decoration; it represents social stages, age, and life transitions,” she explained.

In a delightful cultural dialogue, guests reflected on the striking parallels between the ornaments of Siwa and those of India, two distinct traditions bound by a shared appreciation for symbolism, aesthetics, and the role of jewellery in celebrating womanhood.

Adding a contemporary creative touch to the morning was an engaging jewellery-making workshop by Parul Bhatia Designs. The session offered guests a hands-on experience, allowing them to explore their own creativity while drawing inspiration from both Egyptian and Indian design sensibilities. Laughter and artistry filled the room as delicate pieces began to take shape, each one a small expression of cross-cultural harmony.

The setting itself was a visual and sensory delight. A curated display of Siwan clothing, jewellery, and traditional artefacts created an immersive cultural tapestry, inviting guests to experience Egypt beyond its monuments through its textures, colours, and craftsmanship. The culinary journey that followed was equally enchanting, with guests savouring authentic Egyptian flavours, including dates and olives that carried the essence of the oasis.

The morning gracefully transitioned into a sumptuous lunch, where conversations deepened and friendships were strengthened over a thoughtfully curated spread. It was a celebration not just of cuisine, but of connection.

As the media partner for the event, Diplomatist Magazine was proud to witness and support this meaningful initiative, one that underscores the quiet yet powerful role of cultural diplomacy in bringing nations closer.
