Introduction
For a student who entered university in 2021, the careers of a prompt engineer, Artificial Intelligence (AI) safety researcher, ransomware negotiator or creator-economy strategist were perhaps unheard of. However, within a short period, these have become established careers, attracting millions in investment and growing demand. The rapid emergence of new careers has caused transformations in the global economy and in conventional labour markets. The previous waves of the technological revolution unfolded gradually enough for educational institutions to keep pace. However, the AI revolution, alongside the growing importance of climate policy and cybersecurity, is creating entirely new categories of work, outpacing the ability of traditional institutions to prepare students for them.
The Employment Revolution
No other sector is as illustrative of the transformation as artificial intelligence itself. The arrival of generative AI (GenAI) has given rise to roles such as prompt engineers, reinforcement-learning trainers, AI product managers and machine-learning (ML) engineers. The case of prompt engineering stands out particularly: When Anna Bernstein joined Copy.ai in September 2021, she later observed that the term “prompt engineer” did not yet exist and that there was genuine uncertainty about whether such a role could ever be sustained[1]. Yet, just two years later, leading AI companies such as Anthropic were hiring for competitive positions exceeding pay scales of $335,000/yr[2]. In no time, the newly found AI ecosystem had expanded rapidly in scale and finance, to include red-team safety researchers, forward-deployed engineers and data-annotation specialists, forming the largely invisible supply chain behind large language models (LLMs).
India has emerged at the forefront of this transformation, ranking first globally on LinkedIn’s relative AI skill-penetrative index at three times the global average according to Stanford’s HAI AI index 2026[3], and hosts more than 2,100 Global Capability Centres (GCCs) employing 2.36 million people with a growing share dedicated towards AI-driven functions[4]. While India has a substantial demographic advantage, there is a shortage of attention towards skill training. Industry estimates project a requirement for 1.25 million AI professionals in India by 2027, while the supply-side remains at half that size[5]. Unless this skills gap is addressed, India’s demographic advantage might prove disadvantageous to sustain the country’s position in the rapidly evolving AI economy.
The Role of Climate Change
While artificial intelligence has generated professions from scratch through transformation, the climate transition has done the same through regulation. Governments and regulators in major economies now require the rigorous measurement, disclosure, and management of environmental risks. The EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), California’s climate-disclosure legislation, and India’s Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting (BRSR) Core mandate have collectively generated sustained demand for carbon accountants, climate risk analysts and green-hydrogen engineers. For the first time, the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Future of Jobs Report 2025 placed “environmental stewardship” among the ten fastest-growing skills globally[6], and the transformation in India has been considerable as well. Renewable-energy employment in India already exceeds one million workers[7], with a green economy estimated to generate 35 million jobs by 2047 according to the Skills Council for Green Jobs, with the ILO projecting an additional 8 million green jobs by 2030 alone[8].
The widening gap between labour demand and skill availability in the global green economy is already apparent. Between 2024 and 2025, green hiring grew by 7.7 per cent while the supply of green-skilled workers grew only by 4.3 per cent[9]. In effect, growing environmental regulation is proving to be a powerful source of employment generation, with green occupations increasingly emerging as a permanent feature of labour markets.
The Cybersecurity Ecosystem
With rapid technological change, the growing frequency and sophistication of cyberattacks has generated a significant wave of specialised occupations in the cybersecurity sphere. Roles such as ransomware negotiators, cloud security architects and digital forensics analysts now occupy recognised positions in the labour market, with several jurisdictions now penalising organisations without adequate security capacity. Compliance mandates such as the NIS-II Directive in Europe and India’s Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act mandate specific security practices and resource allocations, thus creating sustained demand for cybersecurity professionals across both public and private sectors. The ISC2 Cybersecurity Workforce Study 2024 estimates a global cybersecurity workforce of 5.5 million professionals against an unmet demand of 4.8 million[10].
India’s position within this labour deficit remains acute, with India reporting nearly 3 million cyber attacks in 2025 according to CERT-In’s annual threat report[11]. Yet, the country needs approximately 3 million cybersecurity professionals, but currently has fewer than 200,000 of them[12]. The DPDP Act’s enforcement has sharpened this shortfall by creating an immediate demand for specialised roles, while the field in the country remains largely accessible without a conventional degree, representing a clear case of reskilling, providing hope for the labour market gap to be filled with relative ease.
The Creator Economy
While discussions on content creation continue to be focused on the growth of social media, far less attention has been paid to the emergence of a broader ecosystem supporting digital content creation. Newly established roles such as newsletter editors, community managers and monetisation strategists now stand behind the success of several creators. Goldman Sachs values the global creator economy at $250 billion and projects growth to $480 billion by 2027[13]. India’s position remains unique, home to over 100 million digital creators[14], shaping an estimated 350 to 400 billion dollars in consumer spending[15]. The Government of India’s announcement in March 2025 of a billion-dollar creator-economy fund and a dedicated Indian Institute of Creative Technology[16] is reflective of the growing recognition of the creator economy as an emerging source of employment and entrepreneurship. Despite its scale, the creator economy is marked by structural vulnerabilities, with sustainable employment opportunities concentrated among a relatively small proportion of participants.
Education and the Future
Across these four sectors, a consistent pattern is that every fast-growing profession has arisen owing to interdisciplinarity, while higher education systems continue to organise disciplines into separate academic domains. PwC’s 2025 Global AI Jobs Barometer found that skills in the most AI-exposed roles are evolving 66 per cent faster than those elsewhere in the economy, and that AI-capable workers now command a wage premium of 56 per cent[17]. India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has moved in the right direction with multidisciplinary degrees and initiatives such as FutureSkills Prime and IndiaAI Mission’s Centres of Excellence expanding access at scale. However, NASSCOM projects that 60 to 65 per cent of India’s current workforce will require significant reskilling by 2030 to meet the demands of the labour market[18].
The rapidly evolving nature of the labour market also means that today’s students would be mistaken to pursue today’s job titles as stable roles, as many of these occupations will significantly evolve, merge or diminish as the technological waves sweep through. Therefore, the enduring advantage remains in cultivating critical thinking, digital literacy, skill building and continuous learning. Educational institutions and policymakers therefore, share an obligation to treat these not as mere supplementary skills, but as the ideal outcomes of modern education.
