In the rapidly evolving landscape of modern geopolitics, where change is the only constant, it is increasingly imperative for nations and individuals to hold steadfast to their civilizational values and remain connected to their historical roots. As global dynamics shift and new power structures emerge, understanding and preserving the core principles that define one’s identity can provide stability and direction. Civilizational values—such as cultural traditions, historical narratives, and foundational beliefs—serve as a bedrock for societies, offering a sense of continuity and purpose amidst the flux of contemporary issues. These values shape national identities, influence diplomatic relations, and impact how communities engage with the world. By grounding themselves in their historical heritage, societies can navigate modern challenges with a clearer sense of who they are and what they stand for. Furthermore, a deep connection to one’s roots fosters resilience and adaptability.

The World Nomad Games (WNG) are a potent symbol of the nomadic civilizations that continue to exist in Central Asia. These Games provide an essential forum for celebrating and maintaining the distinctive customs of the region’s nomadic peoples while modernity reshapes the world. For a very long time, riders, herders, and warriors have flourished in Central Asia, a region well-known for its enormous steppes and rich history of nomadic lifestyles. The customs of the nomadic people, which range from elaborate cultural rituals to ancient sports, are not just artifacts of the past but also vital components of identity and legacy. First held in Kyrgyzstan, the WNG has developed into a major global gathering that highlights these antiquated traditions. The Games serve as a bridge that unites disparate civilizations via shared heritage, while also celebrating the rich tapestry of nomadic culture by uniting nations from all over the world.

These Games provide a stage for traditional sports such as kokpar (a game involving horse-mounted teams competing to grab a goat carcass), kuresi (traditional wrestling), and other events that have been integral to the nomadic lifestyle. These sports, while rooted in historical practices, are revitalized and adapted in the modern context, allowing new generations to engage with and appreciate their cultural significance. Moreover, the WNG foster a sense of unity among Central Asian nations, each of which shares a common nomadic heritage. By hosting and participating in the Games, these countries strengthen their cultural bonds and enhance regional cooperation. The event also attracts global attention, offering an opportunity for international audiences to learn about and appreciate the unique aspects of Central Asian nomadic traditions. In addition to the sports, the Games feature cultural exhibitions, traditional crafts, and performances that highlight the broader scope of nomadic life. This holistic approach ensures that the preservation of nomadic traditions extends beyond sports to include art, music, and lifestyle practices that define the nomadic experience.

Kazakhstan is hosting the 5th edition of these Games from September 8-13 in its capital, Astana. This year’s theme, “The Gathering of the Great Steppe,” is symbolized by the official logo featuring a solar horseman. The logo’s dark red colour, reminiscent of carnelian, symbolizes life energy, the heart, and the Sun. Historically, carnelian was used to decorate traditional items such as the kamshy (whip), belbeu (belt), and jewellery. The logo’s text incorporates a font inspired by the runic Turkic script of the 13th century.

The WNG serves as a bridge between maintaining traditional nomadic cultures and embracing modernity. By showcasing both ancient sports and contemporary advancements, the Games foster a sense of unity among Central Asia’s ethnically and culturally linked countries. The choice of Astana—one of Central Asia’s most modern cities, known for landmarks like the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation—highlights the balance between cultural heritage and modern progress. This blend is essential for navigating today’s dynamic global geopolitical landscape. Central Asian nations have shown strong performances in recent global sports events, including the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games. Kazakhstan, with its vast geographic and economic potential, boasts a substantial youth population that engages in both modern and traditional sports. The WNG exemplify this fusion of tradition and modernity.

The opening ceremony of the WNG took place at Astana Arena on September 8, attended by notable leaders including Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov, and Turkmenistan’s Halk Maslahaty Chairman Gurbanguly Berdimukhamedov. This level of cooperation among Central Asian countries signifies a significant improvement in regional relations and a commitment to preserve and promote common culture, heritage and traditions.

Over 2,500 athletes from around 100 nations will compete in Astana over seven days, featuring a blend of traditional Kazakh sports like kuresi, kokpar, kusbeglik, asyk atu, aralyspak, and togyzkumalak, alongside other sports rooted in agricultural societies. India, with its own rich tradition of nomadic and tribal cultures, has also sent a large delegation to participate in traditional Indian sports such as wrestling and archery.

Despite recent severe floods, Kazakhstan has successfully organized this grand event, demonstrating resilience and commitment to its traditions. As the birthplace of renowned figures like Al-Farabi and Khoja Yasawi, Kazakhstan continues to honour and advance its cultural and scientific legacy. In his opening remarks, President Tokayev emphasized the importance of preserving nomadic heritage and its role in guiding future progress. He highlighted the contribution of nomadic cultures to technological advancements and reaffirmed the role of sports in fostering international friendship and solidarity.

This event is contributing not only to bringing the people of different nations together but strategically also with the participation of many state heads and ministers a number of bilateral discussions and dialogues are also taking place simultaneously. This will help Kazakhstan immensely enhance its soft power projection at regional and international levels. Along with that, Kazakhstan as a tourist destination has been gaining so much attention which will further be enhanced by the WNG.

Moreover, the 5th World Nomad Games organized by Kazakhstan not only attracts enthusiasts of traditional sports from around the globe but also enhances cultural exchange and people-to-people connections. This event plays a strategic role in projecting Kazakhstan’s soft power and establishing its leadership to preserve the nomadic way of life in Central Asia.
