At a high-profile reception hosted at the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi on March 26, 2026, India reiterated its strong commitment to deepening ties with Bangladesh, with Minister of State for External Affairs Shri Kirti Vardhan Singh attending as the Chief Guest.

The event, marking the 56th Independence and National Day of Bangladesh, brought together diplomats, senior officials, and members of the strategic and business community, reflecting the importance New Delhi attaches to its relationship with Dhaka.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Singh highlighted the historical depth and emotional resonance of India–Bangladesh relations, rooted in the shared legacy of the 1971 Liberation War. “The Liberation War of 1971 stands as a testament to the indomitable spirit, determination, and extraordinary resilience of the people of Bangladesh,” he said, highlighting the enduring significance of that defining moment.

He further emphasised that the sacrifices made during the struggle for Bangladesh’s independence remain a joint legacy: “The immense sacrifices made during the struggle against oppression and injustice remain a shared legacy for both India and Bangladesh.” These bonds, he noted, continue to shape a partnership grounded in “trust, shared values, and a common commitment to peace, stability, and prosperity in our region.”

In a gesture of solidarity, the Minister also conveyed condolences over a recent tragedy in Bangladesh. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to the bereaved families… We stand in solidarity with the people of Bangladesh during this difficult time,” he stated, reflecting the empathetic dimension of bilateral ties.

A People-Centric Partnership

Highlighting the contemporary path of the relationship, Singh described India–Bangladesh ties as uniquely close, shaped by geography, history, and culture. “India and Bangladesh are bound by deep-rooted ties… which lend a unique warmth and closeness to our relationship,” he noted.

He stressed that the partnership has consistently been guided by a people-first approach. From connectivity projects spanning rail, road, and inland waterways to growing energy cooperation and trade linkages, the focus has remained on delivering tangible benefits to citizens on both sides.

“Our cooperation has consistently aimed to deliver tangible benefits… strengthening livelihoods and deepening social and cultural connections between our peoples,” Singh said, underlining the practical impact of bilateral engagement.

Expanding Cooperation and Shared Growth

The Minister highlighted the expanding scope of collaboration, noting that development partnerships, capacity-building initiatives, and cross-border projects have all contributed to a more integrated and mutually beneficial relationship.

“Our progress reflects an enduring spirit of collaboration and mutual respect,” he observed, adding that these efforts are guided by “shared priorities and a common vision for inclusive growth.”

This emphasis on inclusivity and shared prosperity aligns with the broader regional vision both countries seek to advance, particularly in a rapidly evolving geopolitical landscape.

Looking Ahead: A Forward-Looking Engagement

Significantly, Shri Singh welcomed the evolving political landscape in Bangladesh, reaffirming India’s readiness to engage with its leadership. He noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first global leaders to reach out, signalling the importance New Delhi places on the relationship.

“India warmly welcomes the new Government in Bangladesh,” he stated, adding that such early engagement reflects “the high importance India attaches to this close and enduring partnership.”

He further underlined India’s commitment to democratic values and constructive engagement: “We look forward to working closely with the new administration to further strengthen our multifaceted partnership and advance our shared aspirations for peace, stability, and prosperity.”
