Argentina’s Perspective on Global Cooperation and Agriculture

At the 7th Agri Business Conclave & Awards, held on 24th March at the TERI School of Advanced Studies, H.E. Mariano A. Caucino, Ambassador of Argentina to India, offered a thoughtful perspective on the evolving dynamics of global economic interdependence and its implications for agricultural cooperation.

He framed his address within the broader debate on globalisation and interdependence, highlighting both its advantages and inherent limitations. While economic interconnectedness has long been associated with peace and progress, he cautioned against viewing it as a guarantee of stability.

“There is a common belief that as countries become more economically interconnected… the likelihood of conflict diminishes. However, history reminds us that this is not always the case.”

Using the example of the First World War, he underscored that even deeply interconnected economies are not immune to geopolitical tensions—an observation that adds nuance to contemporary discussions on global cooperation.

Shifting focus to bilateral ties, Ambassador Caucino highlighted the steady and positive trajectory of relations between India and Argentina. Over the past 75 years, the partnership has grown significantly, particularly following its elevation to a Strategic Partnership in recent years.

“Our bilateral ties have been strong and steadily evolving… cooperation has deepened significantly.”

Trade between the two countries has reached approximately USD 6 billion annually, with India now ranking among Argentina’s top trading partners—an achievement made even more notable by the geographical distance between the two nations.

A key driver of this relationship, he noted, is the natural complementarity between the two economies, especially in agriculture and agribusiness.

“What makes this relationship particularly promising is the high degree of complementarity between our economies.”

This synergy is clearly reflected in the agricultural sector, where Argentina plays a critical role in supporting India’s food security. As a leading supplier of edible oils—particularly soybean oil and sunflower oil—Argentina has established itself as a reliable partner in meeting India’s growing demand.

The collaboration extends beyond trade into investment and industry. Several prominent Indian companies, including Mahindra, UPL, Advanta, Godrej, and Royal Enfield, have already established operations in Argentina, contributing to both industrial growth and agricultural development.

Looking ahead, Ambassador Caucino pointed to new and emerging areas of cooperation. The partnership is expanding into strategic sectors such as mining—particularly lithium, a key resource for clean energy technologies—and energy, reflecting a shared commitment to future-oriented growth.

Beyond the bilateral framework, he also highlighted the broader potential of India’s engagement with Latin America, noting the increasing convergence of interests despite geographical separation.

“While we belong to different regions, the complementarities between our economies continue to create new opportunities.”

Ambassador Caucino reaffirmed Argentina’s openness to deeper collaboration and engagement. “The Embassy of Argentina is open… to continue working together.”
