Shri Kirti Vardhan Singh Addresses Uganda National Day Reception in New Delhi

The spirit of friendship between India and Uganda was celebrated with warmth as the High Commission of Uganda in New Delhi hosted the 63rd Independence Day reception on 28th November at the Eros Hotel, Nehru Place. The evening held added significance as it also marked 60 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations—six decades of partnership woven with trust, solidarity, and shared aspirations.

Gracing the occasion as Chief Guest was Shri Kirti Vardhan Singh, Minister of State for External Affairs of India.

A Tribute to Uganda’s Journey & a Milestone in Bilateral Ties

In his address, Shri Singh paid tribute to Uganda’s remarkable progress and resilience. He noted that this year held special meaning, as it allowed both countries to celebrate Uganda’s national journey while also reflecting on 60 years of diplomatic partnership.

He remarked, “Tonight, we not only honour Uganda’s remarkable journey of progress and resilience, but also celebrate 60 years of diplomatic partnership between our two nations—six decades built on trust, mutual respect, and shared aspirations.”

Students Bring Colour to the Evening

A highlight of the reception was the lively cultural performance by Ugandan students from the Gandhi Institute of Technology and Management, Visakhapatnam. Their spirited presentation drew admiration from all present.

Shri Singh acknowledged them with heartfelt appreciation: “Their vibrant and captivating performance added grace and joy to our celebration.”

A Partnership Strengthened Over Time

Reflecting on the evolution of India–Uganda ties, the Minister highlighted the strong foundation of political goodwill, development cooperation, and people-to-people bonds that define the relationship.

He recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s landmark visit to Uganda in July 2018, during which the Kampala Principles—now the bedrock of India–Africa relations—were articulated.

He also shared his own fond memories from his visit to Uganda for the 19th Non-Aligned Movement Ministerial Meeting in October 2023, saying the hospitality of the Ugandan leadership and people “remains unforgettable.”

Development Partnership at the Core

India’s development cooperation with Uganda continues to expand. From capacity-building under the ITEC programme to major initiatives such as the establishment of the National Forensic Science University campus in Jinja, the partnership reflects India’s commitment to shared progress.

Shri Singh emphasised: “India is proud to be a reliable development partner of Uganda… Our cooperation reflects India’s belief in progress that is inclusive and mutually empowering.”

The Diaspora: A Living Bridge

The Minister paid special tribute to the Indian community in Uganda, calling them a “historic connection” and a living bridge between the nations. He also expressed gratitude to the Ugandan government for ensuring their safety and well-being.

Shared Vision for Peace & Global Equity

India and Uganda share aligned views on global peace, sustainable development, and equitable growth. Acknowledging Uganda’s leadership in promoting regional stability, Shri Singh stressed India’s appreciation for its role in advancing unity and cooperation in East Africa.

A Future Built on Mutual Respect

The Minister reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening the partnership: “Let us continue to nurture this friendship and take it to even greater heights—guided by shared values, mutual respect, and our collective vision of prosperity for our people.”
