The High Commission of Malta to India hosted a grand reception on 29th September at the Ambassador Hotel, IHCL SeleQtions, New Delhi, to commemorate the 61st anniversary of Malta’s Independence. The evening was marked by cultural performances, a soft launch of Maltese products, and the flavours of Maltese beverages, creating a vibrant celebration of Malta’s journey as a nation and its enduring ties with India.
Dr. Neena Malhotra, Secretary (South), Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
Welcoming dignitaries, diplomats, business leaders, and friends of Malta, H.E. Mr. Reuben Gauci, High Commissioner of Malta to India, set the tone with warmth and gratitude. “I am truly delighted and deeply grateful to welcome you this evening as we gather to commemorate the 61st anniversary of Malta’s Independence, achieved on 21st September 1964,” he said.
The evening also held special significance as it coincided with the 60th anniversary of Malta-India diplomatic relations, established on 10th March 1965. Reflecting on this milestone, the High Commissioner noted, “Over the past months, I have had the privilege of delivering lectures on this important subject at some of India’s most esteemed universities. And this journey is far from over — I plan to continue engaging with more Indian institutions and young minds in the months ahead.”
A highlight of the evening was the cultural performance by the famous Maltese Folk Group Kantera whose soulful renditions showcased the island nation’s artistic heritage. Their performance was made possible with the support of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and A&Z Import & Export India. As HC Gauci highlighted, “Beyond tonight’s performance, the Kantera Musicians Group will also be performing in Noida, Ahmedabad, Goa, and other cities. Their interpretation of traditional Maltese music has already received recognition, including performances organised by the Indian High Commission in Malta.”
Guests also witnessed the soft launch of Maltese products in India, supported by A&Z Import & Export.
HC Gauci underlined Malta’s admiration for India’s growth story and economic vision. “Malta greatly admires the Government of India’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat — a self-reliant India. We firmly believe that the forthcoming Free Trade Agreement between India and the European Union will serve as a powerful catalyst for economic growth and for realising this vision,” he emphasised.
Having served in India for five years, the High Commissioner expressed his personal connection with the country: “What I have learned is this: five years are not enough. In fact, no number of years would ever be enough to fully experience India. I am therefore very glad that my government has graciously allowed me to continue my mission here.”
Looking at India’s global role, HC Gauci observed, “During my tenure here, I have witnessed India’s remarkable economic rise — from the world’s fifth-largest economy to now the fourth. I am confident that India’s goal of becoming the third-largest economy is well within reach. No country in the world can afford not to have strong relations with India. The world needs India — a nation whose contributions to civilisation, innovation, and global progress continue to inspire.”
