On May 9, the elegant halls of Travancore Palace in New Delhi came alive with colour and creativity as visitors gathered to mark the Day of Europe. Among the various vibrant corners of the venue, one room stood out—a space humming with quiet concentration, inspiration, and the rhythmic swish of paintbrushes. Here, participants of all ages sat before palettes of vivid hues, sketching pencils, and fine brushes, immersed in an extraordinary artistic experience.

In a remarkable display of cross-cultural engagement, the Embassy of Ukraine in India joined hands with fellow European missions and cultural institutions to offer a unique artistic tribute to European unity. At the heart of this celebration was a masterclass in Petrykivka painting—a distinctive Ukrainian folk art form recognised by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Guiding the session was the accomplished Ukrainian artist Olga Syrovatko, who introduced participants to the rich traditions and intricate techniques of Petrykivka. Characterised by delicate floral motifs, vibrant patterns, and symbolic imagery, Petrykivka is more than just a painting style—it is a living reflection of Ukraine’s artistic spirit and cultural depth.

As brushes glided across paper, participants not only explored a new artistic form but also connected with the heart of Ukraine. “This living tradition reflects not only the artistic soul of Ukraine,” the organisers noted, “but also the strength, creativity, and resilience of Ukrainian women.”

What made the experience truly special was the personal connection each participant forged with their creation. Every individual chose to take home their handmade artwork—a souvenir imbued with personal effort and cultural meaning. These painted pieces, now destined for homes, work desks, or cherished corners, will serve as quiet reminders of the spirit of Ukraine and the unity of Europe.

The event, infused with artistic passion and cross-border friendship, beautifully captured the essence of Europe Day—a celebration of unity in diversity, shared values, and cultural solidarity.
