Moldova’s lavender industry has recently experienced a fascinating resurgence after a period of decline due to severed connections with Moscow, where most of the essential oils produced in Moldova were exported. However, in recent years, a growing cohort of farmers has been revitalizing lavender cultivation. It’s like Moldova’s own lavender renaissance!
Farmers from Moldova have been planting rows of lavender bushes, grown mainly to produce lavender essential oil that can be used in balms, salves, perfumes, cosmetics, and topical applications. In 2021, Moldova’s lavender oil production doubled to 20 tonnes compared to two decades ago. The Lavender Growers Association exports 99 percent of their oil to the European Union, particularly Germany, France, and Bulgaria. These oils are widely used in cosmetics, and their relaxing and soothing qualities are believed to counteract anxiety and insomnia.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. While Bulgaria churns out more lavender oil in terms of quantity, Moldova claims the crown for quality. And guess what? Lavender thrives in Moldova’s dry climate, making it a perfect match. Even multinational cosmetic firms like Weleda have been sourcing Moldovan lavender since 2005, singing its praises like a chorus of happy bees in a lavender field.

So, while the future isn’t guaranteed to be all rosy, Moldova’s lavender fields are blooming once again, capturing hearts and noses alike!
