On August 23rd, the Embassy of Uruguay in India commemorated the 199th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence with a reception at Hotel Taj Mahal in New Delhi. The event was attended by several high-ranking officials, industry leaders, ambassadors, and members of the diplomatic corps accredited to India.
The event was graced by the presence of Dr. L. Murugan, Hon’ble State Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, who served as the chief guest for the evening. In his address, Dr. Murugan highlighted the significance of cultural and economic exchanges between India and Uruguay, reaffirming the Government of India’s dedication to strengthening the bilateral relationship.
H.E. Alberto A. Guani, Ambassador of Uruguay to India emphasised Uruguay’s long-standing hope that India will establish an embassy in Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay. He remarked, “As time passes, our hope remains strong that India will establish an embassy in Montevideo. This step would not only strengthen our friendship but also signal a commitment to a mutually rewarding relationship with a promising future.”
The establishment of an Indian embassy in Montevideo would not only be a significant diplomatic move but also a symbolic gesture, reaffirming the bond between the two nations. The ambassador noted that “bringing an end to this long wait would be a significant milestone, especially as we approach the celebration of our bicentennial next year.”
As Uruguay approaches its 200th year of independence, the country is also focusing on promoting its rich cultural heritage. The ambassador expressed a desire to make Uruguay’s culture more accessible and appreciated on the global stage. He stated, “In this celebration, we also aim to deepen our cultural connections, making Uruguay’s rich heritage more familiar and appreciated.”
In a gesture of goodwill and cultural exchange, guests were treated to traditional Uruguayan cuisine, allowing them to experience the flavours and culinary traditions of the South American nation.
