At the 19th CII India Africa Business Conclave, Mr. Ramesh Mutha, Managing Director of Mohan Mutha Exports, shared insights into the company’s operations and ambitious plans for the future. “We specialise in trading a wide range of building materials and logistics,” Mr. Mutha explained. “Our logistics system is robust, handling the export of 2 million tons of material annually. This capability allows us to forward integrate into EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) contracts.”

Mohan Mutha Exports operates across various sectors, including water, energy, road infrastructure, and marine projects. As EPC contractors, their role involves not only supplying materials but also undertaking comprehensive project management. The company sees Africa as a region with significant growth potential, and Mr. Mutha highlighted, “The opportunities in Africa are substantial, and we are keen to explore these markets further.”

The CII India Africa Business Conclave has been pivotal in their expansion strategy. “The CII India Africa Business Conclave has been instrumental in connecting us with key decision-makers and facilitating project opportunities,” Mr. Mutha noted. Currently, Mohan Mutha Exports is engaged in projects in the Maldives worth over $300 million and is eager to broaden its reach across various African regions.

The company has made substantial inroads into Africa, with established offices in Uganda and Tanzania and plans to open additional locations. Mr. Mutha’s extensive involvement with CII, including leading delegations to the DRC and the Republic of Congo, has provided valuable insights into the local market dynamics. “My active involvement with CII has included leading delegations to the DRC and Congo. These experiences have been invaluable in understanding the local market dynamics and opportunities,” he stated.

Mohan Mutha Exports recognises that establishing a strong presence on the ground is crucial for success. “Networking and establishing a presence on the ground are crucial. Many successful businesses have grown by immersing themselves in the local markets rather than making occasional visits,” Mr. Mutha advised. While acknowledging the inherent challenges of working in developing regions, he emphasised that overcoming these obstacles is part of the growth journey.

Looking ahead, Mohan Mutha Exports aims to scale its turnover significantly. “Currently, our turnover stands at 1,300 crores, and we are focused on scaling it to 10,000 crores,” Mr. Mutha revealed. The company’s strategic presence in Tanzania is seen as a key step toward entering Central Africa and further expanding its footprint.

With a clear vision and a proactive approach, Mohan Mutha Exports is poised to make significant strides in Africa’s burgeoning markets, leveraging its extensive experience and robust logistics capabilities to drive future growth.
