On July 16th, 2024, H.E. Mr. Kenneth Felix Haczynski da Nobrega, Ambassador of Brazil to India, delivered a speech at the conference on “Promoting BRICS’ Multi-Dimensional Agenda,” hosted by the Institute of Social Sciences. His address highlighted Brazil’s strategic approach to international diplomacy and the vital role BRICS plays in fostering global cooperation, especially among countries of the Global South.
“When it comes to financial institutions and reform, we recognise the growing influence of both local and national figures,” Ambassador da Nobrega stated. He emphasised the increasing interest of new members in joining BRICS as a reflection of the need for comprehensive reform, a sentiment echoed by the G20 but uniquely championed by BRICS. This coalition unites the Global South in a shared vision for equitable financial practices.
Brazil’s commitment to financial reform is epitomised by its active involvement in the New Development Bank (NDB). “The NDB plays a critical role in financing infrastructure, housing, energy security, and innovative financial mechanisms, essential for post-pandemic recovery in southern countries,” he noted. This highlights the importance of inclusive growth and the NDB’s pivotal role in supporting sustainable development projects across BRICS nations.
Advocating for economic resilience, Brazil promotes trade enhancement through local currencies. “We emphasise the importance of technical expertise in transitioning to local currency trading, ensuring stability and mutual benefit,” said the Ambassador. This approach aims to reduce dependency on dominant global currencies and foster economic stability within the BRICS framework.
Climate change and climate justice remain central to Brazil’s agenda within BRICS. “We uphold the principles of common but differentiated responsibilities, advocating for increased resources from developed nations to support both mitigation and adaptation efforts,” Ambassador da Nobrega asserted. This stance underscores the necessity for developed countries to play a more active role in addressing climate challenges that disproportionately affect developing nations.
In his closing remarks, Ambassador da Nobrega highlighted Brazil’s pragmatic approach to diplomacy. “While we are sometimes criticised for prioritising practicality over values, our focus on realistic and inclusive solutions aims to address global challenges effectively,” he explained. He clarified that this approach is not rooted in cynicism but rather in a commitment to achieving tangible results through pragmatic and inclusive means. “This is not cynicism, but a commitment to achieving tangible results through the art of the possible,” he concluded.
