On March 7, 2024, Sweden made history by becoming the newest member of NATO, following the deposition of its instrument of accession to the North Atlantic Treaty with the Government of the United States in Washington DC. With Sweden’s accession, NATO now boasts 32 countries among its esteemed members.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg hailed the occasion as a historic milestone, emphasising Sweden’s rightful place at NATO’s table and its equal say in shaping policies and decisions within the alliance. After over two centuries of non-alignment, Sweden now benefits from the protective umbrella granted under Article 5, signifying the ultimate guarantee of Allies’ freedom and security. Stoltenberg also commended Sweden’s robust armed forces and top-tier defence industry, highlighting how Sweden’s accession bolsters NATO’s strength, enhances Sweden’s safety, and fortifies the security of the entire Alliance.
The Secretary General warmly welcomed Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson to NATO Headquarters, where a flag-raising ceremony commemorated Sweden’s accession. Expressing gratitude for Kristersson’s steadfast leadership and dedication to leading Sweden into NATO, Stoltenberg underscored the significance of Sweden’s membership under Article 5 protection, affirming the principle of collective defense.
Amidst the stirring rendition of the Swedish national anthem and the NATO hymn, Sweden’s flag ascended to join the esteemed ranks of its Allies, symbolizing unity and solidarity. The simultaneous flag-raising ceremonies at Allied Command Operations in Mons, Belgium, and Allied Command Transformation in Norfolk, Virginia, underscored NATO’s unwavering commitment to an open-door policy and the freedom of nations to chart their own course. Stoltenberg emphasised that Sweden’s accession reaffirms NATO’s enduring transatlantic bond, which has safeguarded freedom and security for 75 years.
Looking ahead, Stoltenberg emphasised Sweden’s pivotal role in strengthening NATO during a critical juncture for Euro-Atlantic security. Joining NATO signifies not only a boon for Sweden but also contributes to stability in the North and bolsters the security of the entire Alliance. As NATO embarks on its 75th anniversary year, Sweden’s membership heralds a new chapter of cooperation and solidarity, underscoring the alliance’s enduring commitment to freedom, democracy, and collective security.
