Sri Lanka Invites Indian Industry to Partner in Growth Journey

At an interactive session organised by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry in New Delhi, Hon. Mr. Wasantha Samarasinghe, Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Co-operative Development of Sri Lanka, extended a strong message of partnership and opportunity to Indian businesses.

A Nation on the Path of Recovery

Highlighting Sri Lanka’s ongoing journey of rebuilding, Hon. Samarasinghe acknowledged the serious challenges the country had faced in recent years. He emphasised the government’s determination to restore stability and chart a course for growth: “Sri Lanka is currently undergoing a transformative phase. Stabilising the economy and restoring confidence have been among the foremost priorities of our government since assuming office. Today, Sri Lanka is firmly on the path of recovery—committed to strengthening economic stability, ensuring political stability, and creating an environment conducive to sustainable growth.”

Deepening Ties with India

The Minister underlined the importance of India’s role as Sri Lanka’s closest partner during this period of transition. “India, as our closest neighbour and trusted partner, has played a vital role during these difficult times, and we deeply value the solidarity extended to us. Going forward, we are determined to further deepen our partnership with India, particularly in trade, investment, and cultural exchange.”

Opportunities for Indian Investors

Hon. Samarasinghe made a strong pitch to the Indian industry, outlining the key sectors where Sri Lanka is inviting investment: “Sri Lanka today offers a host of opportunities for Indian investors and industries. We are focusing on developing a production-oriented economy, strengthening the agriculture sector, expanding the tourism industry, and promoting value-added manufacturing.”

He added that the government was prioritising Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) to create a more collaborative investment environment: “Our government is committed to fostering Public-Private Partnerships, encouraging greater collaboration between government institutions, private sector players, and international investors.”

Call for Collaboration

Concluding his remarks, the Minister invited Indian businesses to participate in Sri Lanka’s growth story. “I invite Indian businesses and industrial leaders to explore these opportunities in Sri Lanka. Your expertise, investment, and innovation can contribute significantly to our growth journey, while also strengthening the economic bonds between our two nations.”

He further stressed the importance of mutual cooperation: “Let us work together to build stronger, deeper, and mutually beneficial ties in the areas of trade, investment, and culture. With India as a steadfast partner, we are confident that Sri Lanka can emerge stronger, more resilient, and better integrated into the global economy.”
