On the occasion of Europe Day, observed annually on May 9th, the Embassy of Hungary hosted a vibrant cultural afternoon that brought together art, cuisine, and diplomacy in a uniquely engaging format. Held at the Embassy of Hungary in New Delhi, the event celebrated European unity and spirit through the lens of Hungary’s rich heritage and its historic connections with India.

The highlight of the event was a traditional Hungarian lunch featuring the nation’s signature dish—Goulash, a hearty stew that has long been a symbol of Hungarian culinary pride. Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian versions were thoughtfully prepared, allowing guests from diverse backgrounds to savour the comforting flavours of paprika-laced broth, tender vegetables, and slow-cooked meat.

In an engaging gesture of cultural storytelling, the Embassy curated two interactive quizzes for the guests. The first was dedicated to Amrita Sher-Gil, the iconic Indo-Hungarian artist whose legacy continues to bridge the artistic traditions of East and West. The second quiz invited attendees to explore the origins and variations of Goulash, tracing its evolution from humble shepherd fare to a national dish with global recognition.

To enrich the experience further, two short films were screened—one chronicling the life and work of Amrita Sher-Gil, and the other delving into the history and cultural significance of Goulash. The visuals, accompanied by evocative narration, created an immersive atmosphere that sparked lively discussion among attendees.

As the hall filled up, soon overflowing with cultural enthusiasts, the event took on the air of a true celebration. The quiz segment, opened to the floor following the video screenings, turned into a spirited exchange of ideas, anecdotes, and laughter. It was a reminder of the power of food and art to transcend borders and bring people together in meaningful dialogue.

The High Commission of Malta provided refreshing energy and non-alcoholic drinks to complement the Hungarian offerings, adding a Mediterranean flair to the afternoon. The collaboration underscored the broader message of European solidarity and shared values.
