In this exclusive interview with Diplomatist Magazine, H.E. Mr. Yousef Abdelghani, Ambassador of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to the Republic of India, shares his thoughts on the enduring partnership between Jordan and India. He highlights Jordan’s proactive role in promoting regional peace and stability, its commitment to multilateral diplomacy, and the shared vision with India on global issues. The Ambassador also outlines key diplomatic, trade, and cultural initiatives aimed at strengthening bilateral ties, fostering economic growth, and enhancing people-to-people connections.

How would you describe the current state of Jordan-India bilateral relations, and what are the key areas where both countries can further strengthen their partnership?

The current state of Jordan-India bilateral relations can be described as historical, warm, and based on mutual respect, with a long history of cooperation. The two countries have maintained strong diplomatic ties since 1950. The leadership of both nations meets regularly.

The latest exchange of high-level visits between HM King Abdullah II and HE Prime Minister Modi took place in 2018. The two leaders have met several times since then at international forums and have exchanged views over direct phone calls. These continued interactions have further solidified the relationship.

The key areas where Jordan and India can further strengthen their partnership include:

  • Economic Cooperation: Expanding trade and investment opportunities, particularly in sectors like information technology, artificial intelligence, energy, transportation, and tourism.
  • Cultural and Educational Exchanges: Enhancing people-to-people interactions through educational programs, scholarships, and cultural exchanges. Over 500 Jordanian students are currently studying in India, and more than 10,000 Jordanian alumni have graduated from Indian universities.
  • Capacity Building: Providing technical assistance and training programs to support Jordan’s development efforts.
  • Multilateral Cooperation: Collaborating in international forums to address mutual concerns and priorities.

In the near future, the two countries will hold political consultations between their respective Ministries of Foreign Affairs. By focusing on these areas, Jordan and India can continue to build a robust and mutually beneficial partnership.

Trade and investment between Jordan and India have steadily grown over the years. What new opportunities do you foresee for businesses from both nations, particularly in sectors like IT, energy, and agriculture?

The trade and investment landscape between Jordan and India is indeed promising, with several new opportunities emerging in key sectors such as IT, energy, agriculture, and transportation. Bilateral trade between Jordan and India in 2024 reached approximately USD 4 billion.

Indian investments in Jordan amount to about USD 1.5 billion, primarily focused on phosphates, textiles, and phosphoric acid. Notably, Indian investments in Jordan are among the most successful. For instance, Sunil Kumar, an Indian investor and businessman, owns a company specializing in traditional fashion that operates around 25 textile factories in Jordan. The company exports products worth over USD 800 million annually to the American market alone, benefiting from the FTA agreement with the USA.

Jordan hosts a substantial Indian community of over 20,000 people. Indian investors can capitalize on Jordan’s unique geographical location, which offers proximity to Iraq, Syria, and the Gulf countries, along with affordable land trade routes to target these markets. Jordan also has several FTAs with countries like Canada, the USA, Arab nations, and Singapore, as well as a partnership agreement with the EU.

Jordanian laws offer various facilities and incentives to foreign investors to encourage investment in the country.

Key opportunities include:

  • Information Technology (IT): Both countries can collaborate on AI-driven solutions, leveraging Jordan’s growing tech sector and India’s expertise in AI research and development. Joint ventures in software development can cater to global markets, with Jordan providing a strategic location for regional operations.
  • Energy: Both nations can explore renewable energy projects, such as solar and wind, to sustainably meet growing energy demands. Joint efforts in energy-efficient technologies can reduce costs and minimize environmental impact.
  • Agriculture: Focusing on organic farming and exporting organic produce can tap into the global demand for sustainable food options. Additionally, sharing advancements in irrigation systems and crop management can enhance agricultural productivity.

These opportunities will not only strengthen bilateral ties but also contribute to global innovation and sustainability.

Yes, high-level delegations and official visits are planned between Jordan and India this year. While specific dates and details are yet to be finalized, there is a strong tradition of exchanging high-level visits between the two countries.

Jordan has been an active voice in regional diplomacy and global multilateral forums. How does Jordan view its role in the evolving geopolitical landscape, particularly in relation to India’s position on global platforms?

Jordan plays a proactive and pivotal role in the region. Our foreign policy, led by His Majesty King Abdullah II, is committed to promoting peace, stability, and security—not only in our region but across the world.

Jordan has consistently emphasized the importance of multilateral diplomacy and international cooperation in addressing regional and global challenges. Since his ascension to the throne in 1999, His Majesty has been a beacon of hope and stability in the Middle East. His efforts have focused on promoting economic growth, social reform, and regional and international cooperation.

Jordan’s commitment to multilateralism is reflected in its active participation in international forums, its support for international law and institutions, and its collaboration with UN agencies. Jordan is also a contributor to UN peacekeeping forces, demonstrating its dedication to preserving global peace and security.

Jordan and India share a common approach to promoting peace and stability. As a major power in Asia and an emerging global force, India can play a decisive role in stabilizing rising tensions in West Asia by leveraging its wisdom and strong relations with the region’s conflicting parties.

We are counting on India’s leadership and support for a two-state solution to resolve the Palestinian crisis, as well as its continued support for the work of UNRWA within its UN mandate.

India has been a major contributor to UNRWA, and we extend our gratitude to the Indian government for their valuable support. Jordan has also traditionally served as a safe haven for millions of refugees fleeing troubled neighbouring countries, making it a sanctuary for those seeking peace, refuge, and security. Together, Jordan and India can work towards a more stable and prosperous future for the region and beyond.
