The Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) was the venue for a significant event on 12th September, when the second volume of the book Treasures of Gupta Empire was released.

Written by Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, the book offers a comprehensive view, analysis, and explanation of Gupta-era coins from the reign of Chandragupta-I to Vishnugupta, covering a period of 230 years, between 319 CE and 550 CE.

The book explores an ancient period of Indian history known as “The Golden Age of India,” when the country was unified under the banner of the Imperial Guptas. This era of peace and prosperity led to the zenith of Indian civilization in the advancement of arts, science, architecture, trade, and literature.

Monuments like the Dashavatara Temple at Deogarh in the north, the Durga Temple at Aihole in the south, Nalanda University in the east, and the Gop Temple in Gujarat in the west bear testament to this golden chapter of Indian history.

The book not only highlights the significant development in Gupta coinage but also showcases the artistry involved in creating these beautiful coins, each of which featured a substantial gold content under the Imperial Gupta emperors.

The event also featured an exhibition of selected Gupta coins.

It was presided over by guests and historians, including Dr. Sacchidanand Joshi, Member Secretary of IGNCA; Dr. B.R. Mani, Director General of the National Museum, New Delhi; Prof. K.K. Thapliyal, Professor Emeritus at Lucknow University; and Dr. Prashant Kulkarni, Chairman of the Indian Coin Society.
