Prof KC Bansal, Former Director, National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (ICAR), India, delivered a compelling presentation at the 5th Agri Business Conclave on 28th February 2024, at the Ethiopian Embassy, New Delhi, focussing on the biotechnological applications of CRISPR-based genome editing. His remarks centered around utilising this cutting-edge technology to genetically enhance crops, thereby increasing food production and ensuring sustainable agriculture.
He emphasised CRISPR-based genome editing as a groundbreaking Nobel Prize-winning technology. He highlighted its capability to add, remove, and alter specific DNA sequences within an organism’s genome, offering unprecedented precision in genetic manipulation.
The presentation elaborated on the wide-ranging applications of genome editing technology, including: Advancements in cancer therapies, treatment of inherited diseases and genetic enhancement of crops for agricultural sustainability
Prof. Bansal underscored the significant benefits of genome editing in agriculture, emphasising its potential to minimize negative environmental impacts of agriculture, conserve precious natural resources such as land and water, preserve soil health and fertility, reduce dependency on chemical fertilizers and pesticides, safeguard biodiversity, mitigate and adapt to climate change and foster long-term sustainability in agricultural production and food security
He highlighted recent regulatory developments, particularly in Kenya, Nigeria, and Malawi, regarding the treatment of gene-edited crops. These policies, treating such crops similarly to conventionally bred crops, ease regulatory burdens compared to genetically modified organisms containing foreign DNA.
Prof Bansal further stressed the importance of developing a robust regulatory framework across the Global South and achieving harmonization among major agricultural producing and importing countries. Such efforts are essential for the widespread adoption and successful commercialization of CRISPR-based genome editing technology in agriculture.
He provided valuable insights into the transformative potential of CRISPR-based genome editing in agriculture, particularly in addressing global challenges related to food security, environmental sustainability, and climate change adaptation. He underscored the urgent need for collaborative regulatory efforts to facilitate the responsible and effective deployment of this revolutionary technology for the benefit of humanity and the planet.
