Suriname Celebrates 48th Anniversary of Independence

The Embassy of Suriname in India celebrated its 48th Anniversary of Independence on November 15th, 2023, at the Taj Palace Hotel in New Delhi with a distinguished gathering of diplomats, industry leaders, and other guests. His Excellency Mr. Arunkoemar Hardien, Ambassador of Suriname to India, warmly welcomed the attendees.

The event was graced by the presence of the Chief Guest, Smt. Meenakshi Lekhi, Member of Parliament and Minister of State in the Ministry of External Affairs and Culture. Her presence added grace to the celebration, highlighting the strong diplomatic ties between Suriname and India.

This year’s Independence Day celebration took on special significance as it coincided with the commemoration of 150 years since the arrival of Indians in Suriname. The event showcased the rich cultural exchange between the two nations over the years.

In June 2023, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, President of India, visited Suriname, further reinforcing the bilateral relations between the two nations.

Smt. Meenakshi Lekhi, in her address, spoke about the profound importance of the Indian diaspora in the region. She highlighted the cultural, economic, and social contributions of the Indian community, emphasising the shared values and history that bind Suriname and India together.

The evening was a testament to the enduring friendship between Suriname and India, as both nations celebrated their shared history and looked towards a future of continued collaboration and partnership.
