Taking life-saving surgery to new heights

MGM Healthcare’s organized a press meet at The Lalit Hotel, New Delhi on 8th June 2023. Patients from Delhi who have undergone transplant at MGM Healthcare shared their experiences and also expressed their gratitude towards the team of experts.

MGM Healthcare’s Institute of Heart and Lung Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support has performed over 600 heart and lung transplant surgeries in India. The team is responsible for overseeing India’s largest Heart and Lung Transplant program for adult and pediatric patients.

Dr K.R. Balakrishnan, Director MGM Healthcare, Chairman Cardiac Sciences, Institute of Heart and Lung Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support said, “Though there are enough organs available for transplant, lack of awareness about organ donation leads to long transplant waiting lists. India lags behind other countries in terms of availability of donated organs. About organ donation one of the primary reasons for this is the lack of awareness among the public.”

MGM Healthcare has successfully performed Heart and Lung Transplant in more than 50 patients from Delhi. All of them were in very critical condition and their heart or lungs were not working due to which medical treatment had no effect and their lives were saved by timely transplant surgery.

Speaking exclusively to The Diplomatist, Dr. K.R. Balakrishnan said “India is a preferred destination for international patients for medical treatments not only because it is less expensive than other western countries but also because of the quality of healthcare offered. Definitely, an increase in medical tourism increases India’s soft power diplomacy as well and we have treated a lot of patients from Russia, Bulgaria, Sudan and Ukraine.”

Dr. Apar Jindal, Clinical Director and Consultant, Department of Lung Transplant and Interventional Pulmonology said, “Lung transplant is recommended for people who are suffering from end stage lung disease. End stage lung disease is defined as a disease that has progressed to a stage where lung function is severely affected. Most of the patients are already diagnosed with a specific lung disease and then gradually this disease progresses to the end stage. As a result, a lung transplant is recommended for anyone with end stage lung disease. It is important for each patient to consult the appropriate authorities in the area and receive the necessary treatment. So, we regularly run our lung clinics in twenty different cities so that we can meet our patients and solve their problems.”

According to Dr. Suresh Rao, Co-Director, MGM Healthcare Institute of Heart and Lung Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support, “Patients with complete heart and lung failure are at high risk of death and need to be treated in time Their lives can be saved by heart transplant and lung transplant. Transplant can be done with the help of mechanical circulatory support devices like ECMO and LVAD in very sick patients.”

According to Dr. R. Ravi Kumar, Senior Consultant and Associate Clinical Lead, Institute of Heart and Lung Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support, MGM Healthcare, “The National Organ Transplant Program (NOTP) has achieved remarkable success.

One deceased donor can save up to eight lives and this gathering of organ recipients and medical teams aims to raise awareness about organ donation and spread it far and wide. MGM Healthcare wants to bring about a social change and create a culture where organ donation is commonly accepted and many lives can be saved.

Every year more than 200 heart patients receive a healthy heart through this technology, saving their lives and allowing them to return to work and live happily. There are many patients in India who are in need of quality health opinion and advice, hence we as a team visit most of the major locations of the country frequently to meet people so that they can directly benefit from our expertise.”
