India-Spain: Scaling Up Global Economic Cooperation

Observer Research Foundation and Spain’s Elcano Royal Institute jointly released a working paper titled “Spain and India seeking stronger bilateral ties" in Madrid in 2017. The paper has been co-authored by research scholars Rubén Campos Palarea and Jayshree Sengupta.

The relationship between India and Spain are on the cusp of a breakthrough with the two countries commemorating 60 years of diplomatic ties coupled with the visit of Prime Minister Modi to Madrid in 2017.

To mark this burgeoning relations between the long-term diplomatic partners, the Observer Research Foundation and Spain’s Elcano Royal Institute jointly released a working paper titled “Spain and India seeking stronger bilateral ties” in Madrid in 2017. The paper has been co-authored by research scholars Rubén Campos Palarea and Jayshree Sengupta.

Speaking about the research paper on the sidelines of a conference organised by the Embassy of Spain in New Delhi and Elcano Royal Institute, Sengupta highlighted the current status of bilateral relations between India and Spain along with noting key areas of potential improvement between the two countries.

Joshi was of the view that the two nations should look at strategic sectors as key drivers for further cooperation and expansion of bilateral partnership.

The conference was also addressed by Director of the Spanish think-tank Elcano Royal Institute, Charles Powell and Mario Esteban who deliberated on the fast growing economy of Spain which can subsequently benefit India in the different sectors of economic functioning.

Esteban highlighted Spain’s leadership in wind energy as a way to fulfil India’s energy consumption needs along with focusing on maritime security and nuclear energy as other potential areas of bilateral cooperation. He also demonstrated India’s dire need of setting up food processing units, with the help of Spain, and combat increasing wastage of food in the country.
