Morocco's Security Strategy: preventing terrorism and countering extremism

According to Dr. Assia, Morocco is fighting all forms of radicalization. In Morocco, human security is fundamental and prevention is considered the key for ensuring security for all.

Dr. Assia BenSalah Alaoui, Ambassador at Large of Morocco, addressed a gathering of intellectuals on the topic, "Morocco's Security Strategy: preventing terrorism and countering extremism" during a recent visit to Delhi

According to Dr. Assia, Morocco is fighting all forms of radicalization. In Morocco, human security is fundamental and prevention is considered the key for ensuring security for all.

Dr. Assia further emphasized that Morocco being a favorite destination for vacationers attracts tourists from all over the world, and the Moroccan police are extremely vigilant about security.

To combat security challenges, Morocco has built up a comprehensive Global security strategy: which is preventive and anticipates the risks of terrorism:

Dr. Assia detailed the government’s 6 point strategy which is:

1. Morocco has the ambition to fight terrorism within the rule of law.

2. Morocco looks at the holistic aspect, the multidimensional, comprehensive, preventive angle to combat terrorism.

3. Morocco is working on defense and promotion of moderate Islam.

4. Morocco wants International cooperation.

5. Morocco looks at dynamic approach where leadership, determination has enough role to be pragmatic.

6. Morocco wants regionalization which has given birth to the autonomy plan.

On the issue of migration, Morocco has a generous model in place which allows a huge influx of immigrants into the country; though this leads to cross border infiltration and human trafficking which is common in Morocco. There is also Organized crime, which has caused anxiousness in the country and Morocco is taking preventive measures and extreme vigilance to counter these threats. Troops are deployed for surveillances in the city streets. Citizens are encouraged to be alert and vigilant for suspicious behavior of any kind. This is how Morocco is involving citizens in their own security.

Moroccan FBI, the Central Bureau of Judiciary Investigations is the intelligence body countering extremism, and has been efficient in avoiding terrorist attacks lately.

Islamic morocco is very women friendly. Morocco is working towards empowering women. The government helps in promoting women business organizations, which is welcomed by people.

There are targeted programmes such as the National Initiative for Human Development. The government believes it has a responsibility to help vulnerable people come out of poverty and exclusion.

Education reform is an essential intellectual tools objective for new strategy for schools. Morocco feels that till now it has not achieved quality education. It seeks improved quality of languages too. Besides Arabic and French, English and Spanish have also been added to the curriculum of schools.

Morocco is a member of many strategic partnerships. It is Part of NATO and the Mediterranean dialog and receives international cooperation in securing its borders and other equally important issues.

Morocco shares what it has with its African counterparts and this is Morocco’s heritage and legacy for the world.
